Director of '30 Days of Night' and 'Twilight: Eclipse' will direct the sequel/reboot of 'Daredevil'.

Just days earlier, we reported on what director Xavier Gens (Hitman) had in mind for a purported Daredevil reboot if he was given a chance and it actually sounded quite good. Of course, Fox has beef with the guy on ‘Hitman’ and the movie even suffered because of that. Hence, a director has finally been hired and it isn’t Gens.

Variety reports exclusively that director David Slade, who has helmed the fantastic ’30 Days of Night’, ‘Hard Candy’, and the not-so-fantastic ‘Twilight: Eclipse’, has now been hired to direct the ‘Daredevil’ reboot. There’s some interesting add-ons here, one of them being the fact that no writer is working on the script yet and the second being that this isn’t going to be a total remake of the original film, but will carry on the story from there just without Ben Affleck as the main lead. So it’s basically a sequel/reboot. Confusion.

David Slade is a fantastic choice to add a bit of edge to the character. His excellent work on ’30 Days of Night’ carried over to ‘Eclipse’ and made that movie watchable and one of the better films of the series so far. He certainly knows how to direct action and has a grasp of visuals. But the question is – will Fox give him enough freedom to exercise his creative vision or will they oversee the project to its imminent death once again?

You can finally expect to hear much more about the project from this point on.

Has a vision of a drama with an origin story for the character.

Fox botched a very underrated Marvel superhero property with their mediocre adaptation ‘Daredevil’, that wasn’t too bad but was hamstringed by a very miscast Ben Affleck in the main role. Before their rights expire, they have hired writers to reboot the whole thing just like they always do. But a talented director has states his interest in doing a better version of the movie if given the chance.

Comic Book Movie reports on an interview they found where director Xavier Gens, whose previous efforts include the underrated guilty pleasure ‘Hitman’ and ‘Frontiere(s)’, wants to put across his version of ‘Daredevil’ and outlines his idea for the movie in broken English:

If I have to made a Daredevil movie, I will take a completely different direction. My vision of the character is much more a drama. There will be a 1st part in the childhood of Matt Murdock and the universe of Hell Kitchen. Something in the universe of the first Rocky Balboa. Is the story of a poor family of Hell Kitchen, the father is a loser who made some boxing match, the mother is sick and she died. The father have to make the education or is son alone. He became a outlaw, he made fight to win money and one day he is killed by the mob. Alone Matt Murdock go to an orphanage and it’s there were he got in accident. And there is a long re-education because he became blind and he have to learn a new sense. With a very realistic point of view. And he became better and better and he made lawyer study.

And then this:

For Daredevil I think Sam Worthington could be very great and intense for this character. For the vilain it’s depênd of the story.

I’m with him on everything except the Sam Worthington casting decision, who might be yet another miscast for the role just for star value. Of course, he hasn’t been approached by the studio to work on the film but it’s plausible that could happen since ‘Hitman’ was a Fox movie. But it’s still unclear if the rights have been reverted back yet or not.

We’ll keep you updated on any development here.

Whoever came up with the idea of casting Ben Affleck as a blind superhero should really be called up on stage and be deported from Hollywood forever. The first ‘Daredevil’ film was a collosal failure on most respects, even though I’ve heard a few good words about the director’s cut on DVD. But Fox is hurrying to give it another shot before their contract expires and the character goes back to Marvel.

Deadline Hollywood reports that a writer has been hired to write the reboot of the series. Too bad the writer in question is David Scarpa, who wrote ‘The Day The Earth Stood Still’ which was another failure from Fox. The aim here is to make it something dark and gritty like Batman but then again that was the aim the first time and look how that turned out. I really hope they can get the character right this time as he is a unique hero and this could become their very own ‘Batman’.

P.S. – Please don’t try to reboot ‘Electra’. Just, don’t.
