G. I. Joe was a better movie than ‘Transformers 2′ although it was just as shallow and commercial. But it earned just over $300 million at the box office which isn’t that great when you talk about a summer movie. Yet, it sells a lot of toys which means Paramount is moving ahead with the sequel which now has a potential start date.

MTV had a talk with the producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura and he revealed the status of the script as well as a start date:
We’re not that far. I think it’ll be pretty soon. It’ll need a lot of work. They all do. I’ve had an occasion to read some of their pages, so I know the quality is there and the sense of tone is there. Paramount is very excited about us getting it going. No dates have been set. In our heads we think 2012 — that summer.
He also says that there is a chance not all of the cast might return, and the fact that no 3-D has been discussed yet. I really hope they take this chance to fix the script issues and make it a better experience the second time around.
I’m not holding my breath, though.
