By now, only a person living under a rock for the last few months wouldn’t know the name ‘Avatar’. It’s only a movie that’s grossed $2.38 billion worldwide and is a major Oscar contender. Wondering about ‘Avatar 2′? Director James Cameron has that in the works too, but for now he will return to Pandora in a different form.

Producer Jon Landau revealed to MTV that Cameron has plans to write a novel that will serve as a prequel to ‘Avatar’. The book, set to arrive by the end of the year, will explore the backstory to the film:

“It would be something that would lead up to telling the story of the movie, but it would go into much more depth about all the stories that we didn’t have time to deal with — like the schoolhouse and Sigourney [Weaver's character] teaching at the schoolhouse; Jake on Earth and his backstory and how he came here; [the death of] Tommy, Jake’s brother; and Colonel Quaritch, how he ended up there and all that.”

Anyone who has read the scriptment for the film knows that a lot of backstory was set to be filmed but was omitted out. Looks like it will get its due in literary form. I can’t wait to explore the story behind Earth’s issues and connect back to Jake Sulley’s character.

It may be the closest thing you will get to an ‘Avatar 2′ for quite some time.
