History has been made. After nearly 13 years, ‘Titanic’ has sunk again. ‘Avatar’ has beaten it to become the new highest grossing movie of all time with a mammoth worldwide total of $1.85 billion and counting.

Titanic’s previous record of $1.84 billion was just beaten today as foreign and U.S. tallies came into the picture. ‘Avatar’ has been the top movie around the world for every single week since it was released and is poised to be so for weeks to come. It is safe to say that given its pace right now, $2 billion will fall by the end of next week.

In the U.S., the film is very close to beating Titanic’s domestic gross and will do so by this weekend too. Higher ticket pricing due to 3-D, immense hype, and the delivery of a truly brilliant event picture all led to this moment. James Cameron now claims the top two highest grossing films in motion picture history.

King of the world, indeed.
