After reigning the world records with the top 2 highest grossing films in history being on his name, James Cameron isn’t going to wait another decade to follow up with his next film. He already has something ‘atomic’ in mind.

According to recent reports, James Cameron visited to Nagasaki, Japan, on December 22nd to meet Tsutomu Yamaguchi. Most won’t know this name, but he is the last American survivors from the atomic bombing in Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the second World War. Along with Cameron was writer Charles Pellegrino who has penned a book about the dramatic event called ‘The Last Train from Hiroshima: The Survivors Look Back’. Yamaguchi died this week of cancer.
And so James Cameron has optioned rights for the book which, as the Variety describes, “takes place over two days and weaves together eyewitness accounts of the Japanese civilians and American pilots who experienced the atomic explosions firsthand. According to the book, 30 people are known to have fled Hiroshima for Nagasaki — where they arrived just in time to survive the second bomb. Yamaguchi was the sole survivor who experienced the full effects of the detonations at ground zero both times.”
It’s in the early stages and not really set up anywhere yet nor is it confirmed that Cameron might direct it. But Cameron has promised “pass on his (Yagamuchi’s) rare and harrowing experience to future generations.” It could have the potential to be an epic that only Cameron can do justice to and has a rousing and never done before subject matter.
Or he could just end up making ‘Avatar 2′.
