If anyone had doubts about how big Avatar will be, now is the time to clear them. James Cameron’s latest epic ‘Avatar’ topped not only the U.S. box-office with a healthy taking of $77 million over the weekend for being one of the biggest December opening grosses ever. But a bigger feat was also achieved.

‘Avatar’ was a bigger winner internationally in 106 foreign markets (including UAE) with a total worldwide gross of $242 million worldwide. That not only puts it at one of the biggest worldwide openings of the year, it also is the biggest worldwide opening ever for an original film (film that is not a sequel, remake, or based on any existing property). Add to the fact that word of mouth is fantastic with many people waiting to see the movie in the holiday season and we’ve got a great start to a brilliant film.

Considering the budget of the film, I’d say if the word of mouth is really strong and the movie can hold up against Sherlock Holmes next week, it is well on track to cross the billion mark and prove profitable for all parties involved.

It will be interesting to see how the audiences react to the film in coming weeks and will decide its fate.
