After the record breaking success of ‘New Moon’ and ‘Eclipse’ being almost done with, Summit Entertainment is now thinking of plans for the controversial final book in the Twilight series ‘Breaking Dawn’. And they’ve finally hired screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg (who wrote all the Twilight movies) to pen a script for the film and they hope to have ‘New Moon’ director Chris Weitz back at the helm for this one. And yeah, it’s going to be split into two movies a la Harry Potter.

There’s two potential problems that they’re looking at here. I understand their efforts for milking the franchise as long as they can, but the stars only have a deal for three films. This means that for the final two films, they will have to ‘negotiate’ with the cast on an amount that they will decide which could skyrocket their costs. The second problem here is the novel itself. I haven’t read it myself, but I’ve heard from a number of different people that it is batshit crazy. There’s vampire sex, baby vampires, vampire ‘loving’ and a lots more that would send the tween audience screaming from the theaters (See here for a full breakdown of what to expect). Not only will the fans be polarized by it, but I don’t think any director or probably even the cast would like to work with such bizarre fiction in a movie, let alone two.
A good movie that they did was to hire David Slade to direct ‘Eclipse’, who also directed ’30 Days of Night’ which was a movie featuring ‘real’ vampires. He will bring his unique style into the mix and make it darker and hence appeal to the male crowd a little bit.
It will be interesting to see Summit get out of this situation.
