First Impressions
My reaction is

What better way to celebrate the season of Halloween than by watching plain old horror films? We at MeMovies have assembled a list of 10 horror movies for you this Halloween that you probably haven’t seen but should check them out the first chance you get. Move over the glossy studio remakes and sequels and endless cliches that you are forced to watch every season, these movies are bound to make creep you out on a whole new level. Are you ready?

image

Enter with caution : scares abound inside!

10. The Midnight Meat Train

midnightmeatrain

Ever been scared of riding the train alone late night, especially now that the Dubai Metro is fully operational? Do not watch this movie then. Adapted by a Clive Barker short story, 2008′s “The Midnight Meat Train” is a truly chilling ride all the way through that features creepy atmospherics and a mindblowing performance by Vinnie Jones.

The movie was unfortunately a victim of studio politics, after which Lionsgate head dumped it onto low dollar theatres and DVD which was a real shame considering the quality present here. Even though the title may evoke the feeling that this will be a gorefest, it’s actually a potent detective story with some unique elements blended in and makes up for a great ride.

9. High Tension

hightension

The French have provided us with some of the greatest horror films of the decade, and High Tension was the first. Directed by Alexander Aja who later on went to direct the taut “The Hills Have Eyes” and the mediocre “Mirrors”, the movie changes a rather simple plot into a brutal and gory tense ride that lives up to its title.

Featuring some of the most taut sequences ever filmed, the movie gained an instant cult following for it’s unrelentless brutality and an especially controversial twist ending that you will in no way see coming, which might annoy or impress you. Either way, the ending changes the whole meaning of the film and marks it as one of the best foreign horror films.

8. Dead End

deadend

Probably the most obscure movie on the list, Dead End is one surprising little gem. Made on a small budget and on an ultra creepy motorway, the film succeeds in tapping our darkest fears about being stuck in a circle late at night and the mysterious demons we find along the way. It’s darkly comic moments complement the scares brilliantly, and a slam bang twist ending makes sure you get something different than your average Hollywood fare.

If you can find it, do check it out.

Ok, I am going to take your advice on some of these movies… But I read on a movie list that I really should watch The Mist because it was scary and it was pants. So I'm book marking this list and if these movies are crap I'm coming back…

    • Vanessa

To be honest I didn't like The Mist, It wasn't scary. I would recommend not to watch it, unless you already have. It disappointed me.

  • Emily

    Where did you find "Inside"?

  • Stiffy

I LOVED Pontypool! I saw a preview for it online and thought it looked interesting, so I watched and and I must admit it had me glued. I recommend it to all my horror movie friends. And High Tension was another that just had me flipped and stuttering at the end. LOVED IT! Thanks for the list!

  • Advisor

High tension is also called switchblade romance

  • Indie

Trick R Treat is sincerely one of the best movies I've ever seen. It's mine and my fiance's annual tradition to watch it for the Halloween season, but honestly the discipline kills because I want to watch the movie all year round! Can't wait to watch it again as soon as the first week of October rolls around. Trick R Treat 2 is coming out next year and I'm a little nervous of whether it'll give the first movie justice or not… but I guess we'll see.

Great collection of movies here. I always have major movie marathons during the fall and I'll pick out some of these to put on the list.

  • Meh

Correction for the Inside synopsis: the stranger wants the unborn child to raise it, not to kill it. Otherwise, cool list.

  • Bill Coffin

Pontypool is just a great, great movie. One of the most witty and intelligent takes on the zombie theme I've seen in a long while. High Tension was good too but if you think about the twist too long, the movie starts to fall apart. Also agree on Shutter. That movie is just scary as all hell.

  • SEN

    Damn, seen em all :|

  • Melayahm

I shall bookmark this page and see if I can work my way through them. Most 'modern' horror films are just schlock fests, not actually scary at all, its been a long time since a film actually gave me the chills, (The orginal The Haunting was one of my faves, no blood in it, but it made mine run cold).

  • Guest

You should take a look at 'Martyrs' if haven't done already.

  • xgffg

    i love you right now.
i had this halloween movie marathon planned.
but i wanted to play unknown movies.
you, my friend, are a life saver

  • Horror Buff

I love your list…I've actually seen you're number one and I agree it is ONE OF THE BEST.

  • HuBuS83

    Good post.
Some flicks i have never heard of until now.
I think " 12;00 Meat train" is a classic, love that flick.
    @ Suzette
Naha, im bigger fan of horror than you lol.
    Thanks

  • Hannah

Awesome list! The only one here that I've heard of is [REC] (which is probably my favorite horror movie ever). Definitely going to watch the rest of these, and just in time for Halloween. Thanks!

  • William

Thank gosh that Trick R Treat is finally getting some props, its as you said, a perfect halloween movie

  • Tummer79

    10. Midnight Meat Train- have been meaning to watch, 9 High Tension- loved it , 8. Dead End – fantastic mindf*ck, 7-Session 9- hated it, very slow, and uneventful, 6-Inside – has been recommended to me before, can't wait to see it, 5- Pontypool – hearing about it for the first time here, 4- Cube- never heard of, 3- Shutter- absolutely horrifying, creepy, gives me the chills just thinking about, loved the creepy photo premise (those were real ghost photos they used) LOVE this movie, can't believe the american version was so lame. 2- Rec- have not seen, 1-Trick r Treat- I adore this movie, I think it's downright cute, in a comic booky, creepshowish genre. i love the way all of the stories are intertwined. Definitely a classic!!!

  • guy

i love the few movies on this list that i've seen and after reading the summaries i'm really interested in watching some of the ones i haven't yet seen. thanks!

  • Denise

I just saw Pontypool and loved it.

  • jenn

thanks! i've seen 3 of these, and i loved them. rec and session 9 are in my all time top movies. high tension was pretty good as well. i'm glad to finally find someone who has similar tastes that can recommend scary movies to me :-)

  • bdark

For people who like foreign horrors check out Malefique a french movie i thought it was fantastic. Trust me

  • Ogar

Any list that claims to contain good movies but has the movie "High Tension" listed is obviously bullshit. That movie is not only blatant plagiarism of the Dean Koontz book "Intensity", it bastardized Koontz's original story by cutting it off halfway and pasting on one of the worst and laziest endings I've ever seen in a movie. Of course, the fact that the non-word "unrelentless" was used just goes to show whoever wrote this list is an idiot, so I shouldn't expect much more. Even if unrelentless was a word, "unrelentless brutality" would mean brutality that relents. Upon further inspection, I found that this type of logical/grammatical error is quite common throughout the list, further solidifying my conclusion that the author of this list is somehow mentally challenged. The proprietors of this website would do well to find people who a) know what they're talking about and b) understand the language they're writing in to write these posts.

  • anonymous

    martyrs.

  • http://rucompatible.blogspot.com Pete

these are dope and really obscure, but i have to ask what is "High Tension" doing on this list? It got a pretty general release in the US.

  • Soylent Green

I'm gonna comment just for the hell of it…. some of these look great and I will definitely check them out. I heard of a movie called "Martyrs" from 2008 that is supposed to be severely disturbing. But the one thing I will be watching for sure on Halloween night is the premiere of "The Walking Dead" on AMC…..can't wait for that!!! *Peace*

  • Good List

Ive heard of both, The Midnight Meat Train (it had previews on another unknown film i love called Amusement) and a friend of mine told me about Trick 'R Treat. I really want to see them all but on the subject of the foreign films, are they in English, dubbed, or subtitled?? Haha, i would hate to watch a movie in which i have no clue what is going on.

  • KillThrill

Awesome! I love horror movies and I'm trying to watch as many gory horror movies to inspire my real life killing rampage.

  • Faisal Hashmi

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Definitely caught a lot more horror movies in the following year and have quite a few recommendations to make this Halloween in 10 more horror movies to watch. Do check it out!

  • Pontysux

Pontypool tried to be refreshing and failed. All I will say is "Kiss is kill" is stupid.

  • Coffeebeans

High Tension kind of sucks. But that’s probably because i saw “Martyrs” the day before and it scared the shit out of me.
“Midnight Meat Train” is alright too…nothing exceptional.

Some of the other more hardcore horror movies recommendations are as follows (in no particular order):

    1) Spanish “Orphanage.”
    2) Japanese “The Cure.”
    3) Taiwanese “Silk.”
    4) American “The Strangers”
    5) Italian “The Vanishing.”
    6) Chinese “Mirror”
    7) H.P. Lovecraft’s “Dagon.”
    8) H.P. Lovecraft’s “From Beyond.”
    9) John Carpenter’s “In the mouth of madness.”
    10) The duel awesomeness of sci-fi/horror with “Event Horizon” and “Sunshine.”

It is best to watch a horror movie with no idea what to expect out of them so i have added one detail to point where to look for these movies. The rest, you will have to find for yourself.

Happy Halloween and thanks for the list.

p.s. i saw “Jaws” today after avoiding it for years…that is one damn scary, good movie.

  • Coffeebeans

There is something wrong with the fonts of the comments…they seem to be overlapping each other and hid half of the movies i recommended.

  • bob saget

    stop saying taut

  • Dave

F*ck “Session 9″. I’ve heard so much praise about how great that movie was. The movie was a piece of trash. The plot was terrible, the actors were terrible, (Did you laugh your ass of when Warren from ‘Empire Records” showed up?)and not one scary thing happened. The film was uninspired, unimaginative, and a total failure.

    I love horror movie.. :)

  • Grim

Seen Trick R treat a while back awesome film definitely deserves to be no.1.
Seen quite a few on this list =)

i have been in love with trick r treat since i first saw it. it is the perfect halloween movie and am so surprised that i havent been able to find any other lists that include this movie….until now. are they any other movies similar to trick r treat? it is without a doubt my favorite movie

  • http://safcom.sytes.net Safwan

Will watch all of them definitely! Thanks for the awesome list!

  • zone

Check out french MARTYRS, its scariest torture porn out there, and the plot is actually good…

  • Beyonda

I’ve been grabbing these, from your list, now and I am most pleased I have. Pontypool was MOST refreshing. High Tension had me, well, tense. All in all a great suspense flick and effectively gory.(I do however agree with the other poster on it falling apart upon deeper analysis of the twist). I’ve sen both of the Rec flicks – not shabby. Cube was … clever.

I have a few others on my drive to wacth now. Heh heh heeeeh.

  • outvisible

meadowwoods was one of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen. it might be considered a suspense film, not necessarily a horror film, but very good and very obscure none the less

  • Dan Hartz

I stumbled across Dead End when I was laid up in bed sick. To ad to the atmosphere, it was a rainy and dark day. The movie seriously scared the shit out of me.

  • Megella

I can’t say I agree with this list completely. The only ones I agree with are Shutter, High Tension, and Trick ‘R Treat.

Midnight Meat Train has the potential to be fantastic, but the ending killed it. Session 9 had it’s moments(barely any) and it was painfully slow. And Dead End was AWFUL!! I admit, I laughed really hard at some parts, but overall it was a waste of time. Again, the ending killed it. Their problem could have been solved if they just turned around!!!!!!! Films like Dead End make me angry and resentful because I want my time back.

The rest, I haven’t seen, though I do agree they sound good.

@outvisible: I LOVED Meadowwoods. LOVED it.

  • smokindnk

    What about human centipide

  • http://www.tassimobrewbot.org Tassimo BrewBot

Rec was a great flik. I like most all the movies on this list. Thanks for the great list!

  • FreakShow

I totally agree with what you said about Trick r’ Treat. I plan on watching it every Halloween as a tradition. And I didn’t even know Shutter(the American version) was a remake of something. I know, dumb of me not to know, but still. I thought it was terrible. But now that I know it was just a dumb remake, I plan on watching the original Thai version. Thank you~

  • Lelio

Trick ‘R Treat as #1? Really?
Maybe I have bad taste in movies, but I hated it.

  • Lorena

no more twist ending for hight tension, that picture is a spoiler

  • Jacqueline Rainwater

Thank you for this list.It helped me to find many movies i did not find before on my own.Trick R treat was a great film! thank you
