After the enormous success of Star Trek and Chris Pine’s portrayal of Captain Kirk in particular, it comes as little surprise that Paramount wants to keep this rising star in their lot for as long as possible. Other than the Star Trek sequel which is in production and “The Art of Making Money” which he may sign on to soon, Variety now reports that he is on top of the list to play the iconic Jack Ryan from Tom Clancy’s novels who was played by Ben Affleck, Harrison Ford and Alec Baldwin before.

The Jack Ryan series has seen renewed interest after hits like The Bourne Identity revamped the espionage genre. The series, which includes Hunt For Red October (Alec Baldwin) Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger (Harrison Ford) and was brought to a dead end by Sum of All Fears where Ben Affleck took over the role and the movie gave disappointing results.
Paramount plans to make this a younger Jack Ryan, which may be a good idea as a reboot to cut all ties from the previous ones and start over. A new screenplay is being prepared which is not related to any Tom Clancy novel. Chris Pine is currently filming “Unstoppable” starring Denzel Washington and directed by Tony Scott, and there’s no word as to whether Star Trek 2 or this will be next for him.
I think Chris Pine is a pleasant guy and is charismatic on screen, and its good to see him getting his due in Hollywood.
