Will Mark Webb return for ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′?
He shows interest in the sequel and so does the studio, but there are roadblocks to beat.
Though the film still hasn’t been able to convince the skeptics that it was entirely necessary or anything new at all, ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ is considered a successful reboot that may have rehashed a lot from the original but gained acceptance from audiences. And Sony definitely plans to make it a new trilogy of movies, but that would ideally involve director Marc Webb staying on board till the completion of it to ensure the same vision. And though both the director and the studio express interest in keeping things that way, there are obstacles to be faced.

The LA Times says that Columbia and Sony are keen on having Webb back on the director’s chair for the sequel and even the director himself always planned to return, but the problem is that Webb also has a contractual obligation to make another film for Fox Searchlight after he directed ’500 Days of Summer’. The studio did allow him to go make ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’, but they don’t want to do that for the sequels that will follow. This could be a problem, because the sequel already has a summer 2014 release date and work needs to begin soon enough. Does that mean that Sony will have to unwillingly look for another director?
There is hope, though. Fox Searchlight is interested in letting Webb go ahead and direct the sequel, but only if he agrees to then make two movies for Fox instead of the contractual one that he had to. So now, Marc Webb has a choice – will he go ahead and take the offer to direct a huge sequel like this one while knowing that he’s now forced to make not one but two movies for Fox? It’s an intriguing dilemma, but the upside is that it’s Fox Searchlight, which has done some of the best indie movies we’ve seen lately and has great success at the Oscars. Could be worse.
But we ask you – would you want to see a new director for the Spider-Man sequel or Webb to return?
