‘The Hunger Games’ final film will be split into two parts
The final book in the series ‘Mockingjay’ will now be two separate movies a la Harry Potter/Twilight.
‘The Hunger Games’ was a true success this year when it comes to actually finding a surprisingly large audience and staying in cinemas as long as it did, and now Lionsgate is quickly prepping ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ as the sequel for next year. But there are only three books in the series, with ‘Mockingjay’ being the finale book in the series. So how do you make a lot of money with only a three-book franchise? You make four movies out of them.
Lionsgate announced that the final book in the series will be split into two different movies that will most likely be shot at the same time. ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1′ will be releasing on November 21, 2014 while ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2′ will invade screens on November 22, 2013. While this was done with ‘Lord of the Rings’ a decade go, the trend really caught up when ‘Harry Potter’ split its final book into two separate movies and made a boatload of cash two times. While that book was an expansive one that really needed two movies to be able to satisfyingly tell the story, Twilight copied that and ‘Breaking Dawn’ was also announced to be in two needless parts and the final part of that is set to release November this year. So this unhealthy trend has clearly caught on whether the material demands it or not.
The strange part is that apparently ‘Mockingjay’ is the thinnest in the series in terms of plot and there’s not much material there to span two movies. But I guess they have a plan which is hopefully not just ‘more money’.
