My reaction is

In possibly the biggest news in videogame adaptations in a long time, award-winning actor Michael Fassbender has officially signed on to star as the lead in as well as produce Ubisoft’s videogame adaptation of ‘Assassin’s Creed’.

We already knew that Ubisoft Motion Pictures have been planning a movie adaptation based on their bestselling game franchise, and the interesting information was that they wanted full creative control in the project in terms of casting, the director, the budget and the release date. Now, Variety reports that they’ve made their first decision in the form of Fassbender producing and starring in a potential series of films based on the game series. We’ve seen the actor in a bunch of excellent movies like ‘Inglorious Basterds’, ‘X-Men: First Class’, ‘Shame’ and most recently ‘Prometheus’.  Ubisoft Motion Pictures head Jean-Julien Baronnet has revealed that the actor was always the first choice for the project and that he will most likely be playing Altair in the film. Will he also play Desmond Miles and Ezio Auditore in the film? Time will tell.

It’s the biggest and most high profile actor that a videogame adaptation has ever gotten, and certainly the most talented actor of the bunch and this could give the movie a lot of credibility by the time it releases. But the question lies on who would eventually direct the movie, and the fact that Fassbender is also producing the film means that he will certainly have a say in who ends up helming the film. But we’ve got our picks for the best potential directors for the film, and that’s an article to soon follow. But yeah, if this doesn’t get you excited about the potential awesomeness that this franchise could hold in film form, nothing will.

Thoughts?

Except Angelina Jolie was only ‘that chick from Gone in 60 Seconds’ before she signed on to play Lara Croft, which skyrocketed her to become the Angelina Jolie we know her as. Michael Fassbender has a number of high profile movies under his belt at this time and some major award-buzz thanks to his role in ‘Shame’ and ‘Prometheus’ most recently.
