Marvel plans new ‘Hulk’ movie for 2015
At first, there was no such plan. But your love of the Hulk in ‘The Avengers’ changed it all.
Anyone who saw ‘The Avengers’ this week (if you haven’t, go and do that now) knows that probably the best element of the film was the character of Hulk himself and some of the best scenes in the film belong to him. Just a few weeks ago, The Huffington Post asked Marvel president Kevin Feige whether a new Hulk movie will be given a shot at after 2003′s ‘Hulk’ and 2008′s ‘The Incredible Hulk’ did moderately well at the box office. This is what he said:
Well, no. This was the other shot. Right? I mean, this was the third appearance of Hulk and everything that we had and were going for, we put in to Hulk’s appearance in “Avengers.” So, I love that people are saying that and are feeling that way about Hulk, but mission accomplished at this point. And the way we go forward, we’ll see. But it was a long road to get to this point. … But we’ll be very careful about it and deliberate — as we were in how we wanted to bring him back in “Avengers.”
Now that the movie has released, things have changed though.
Forbes says that Marvel’s President of Consumer Products Paul Gitter believes that Marvel has been “pleasantly surprised by the phenomenal response” this new rendition of Hulk has received and hence their stance might have changed a little bit:
His sales are up in a major way. We repositioned him from where he was always misunderstood to now depicting him in a more heroic and aspirational manner.
And that’s not just it. Aside from them actually positioning the character as a ‘corporate icon’, they plan to “[spinning] him off to a stand-alone program next year” with a new movie coming in 2015.
Hulk is one of my favorite comic book characters and I really feel that he’s been underused in film even after how ‘The Avengers’ had a lot of fun with him and gave him the spotlight he deserved. But he has a lot of potential in a stand-alone film. I just hope it’s not a remake of the first two movies we already saw.
