First Look: Johnny Depp & Arnie Hammer in Disney’s ‘The Lone Ranger’
Johnny Depp is Native American Tonto in Disney’s upcoming big-budget adventure.
It wasn’t the smoothest of roads to get the shooting of Disney’s ‘The Lone Ranger’ going. Disney pulled the plug on the project last year thanks to inflated budgets and producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski had to trim down a lot of fat to bring the budget down to acceptable levels before Disney greenlit it once again. Now that the film is actually shooting, Bruckheimer has tweeted the official first look of the movie and shows Johnny Depp and Arnie Hammer as Tonto and The Lone Ranger.
Here’s the plot synopsis:
The Lone Ranger is a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.
I like Depp’s look here, even though it still fits into his ‘quirky character’ mold. He looks different from his other characters and so far nails the Native American appearance that Tonto really should have. Arnie Hammer looks suitably appropriate as Lone Ranger and it’ll be interesting to see how the character will fare since we know that the movie will be from the point of view of Tonto and not him. But it’s looking good so far.
The film also stars Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale, Ruth Wilson, and Helena Bonham Carter and is readying up for a May 31, 2013 release.
