Bryan Singer Updates Classic Tale In ‘Jack The Giant Killer’ Trailer
Jack and the Beanstalk takes a gritty turn.
2012 is the year of revisionist takes on classic literature and events with gritty takes on ‘Snow White’ and Abraham Lincoln even. Add one more to the list with this new trailer for ‘Jack the Giant Killer’ which is directed by Bryan Singer and looks like a muddled but interesting take on another fable.
Jack the Giant Killer tells the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack, into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom, its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend—and gets the chance to become a legend himself.
The last story that I would have expected to take a girtty turn is Jack and the Beanstalk and I’ve got to say the story doesn’t really fit the tone that the movie is trying to take. The serious bits just end up looking funny instead because of the content involved and there should have been a tongue in cheek tone taken instead. ‘Puss in Boots’ this year did this same storyline in a much more fun fashion. But aside from that, Singer is a great director and it does look like a promising adventure for sure. Nicholas Hoult looks miscast, though.
