My reaction is

Every now and then in Hollywood, we get two different versions of the same story coming out at the same time by two different studios who then compete furiously with each other to come out on top. Next year, ‘Snow White’ will be the topic of war as Relativity Media has their family-friendly ‘Mirror Mirror’ starring Julia Roberts ready for release next year. The more interesting take on the tale however is by Universal, who has put a dark gritty spin on the fable with ‘Snow White & The Huntsman’. And this first trailer definitely puts the film on the radar.

In the epic action-adventure Snow White and the Huntsman, Kristen Stewart (Twilight) plays the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen (Charlize Theron) out to destroy her. But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the young woman threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) dispatched to kill her. Sam Claflin joins the cast as the prince long enchanted by Snow White’s beauty and power. The breathtaking new vision of the legendary tale is from Joe Roth, the producer of Alice in Wonderland, producer Sam Mercer and acclaimed commercial director and state-of-the-art visualist Rupert Sanders.

There’s a massive sense of epic scale here and the film definitely doesn’t look like a fairytale, instead reminding audiences of the medeival war movies of late. And I guess that was exactly the point. Charlize Theron looks competent as a villain and Chris Hemsworth particularly impresses as a bad-ass warrior who teams up with the questionable casting of Kirsten Stewart as Snow White to defeat the evil queen. The battle scenes and effects look spectacular and overall a much more interesting movie than the straightforward Relativity adaptation. Definitely something to watch out for.
