‘The Punisher’ To Become a TV Show
Sounds like a network version of ‘Dexter’.
While usually Marvel characters have a great history at the box-office, the same cannot be said of ‘The Punisher’. The story of a vigilante cop was first made in 2004 starring Thomas Jane and ended up with disappointing box-office results, and then got a reboot in 2008 with a much grittier tone and completely flamed out at the box-office. There was talks that Marvel will reboot it once again under their helm, but looks like the character is now headed to the smaller screen.
Variety says that the property is now being developed as a hour-long procedural TV show. But unlike the character from the comics or movies, the Frank Castle in this version will be an NYPD detective by day and a vigilante by night. The show will have him “seeking justice for those failed by the court system.” Ed Bernero will exec-produce the show and there’s still no channel booked for the show to air on, but it probably will be a network broadcast channel instead of a cable channel.
Personally, this sound way too much like the much superior and an excellent show ‘Dexter’, which has a FBI analyst by day who goes out and kills by dishing out vigilante justice at night on people who get away with their crimes. Given the success of that amazing show, it’s hard for this show not to be compared to that one. It makes sense for them to make it a procedural, but I hope they end up keeping the personal vendetta aspect from the movies which would make it more interesting.
