‘Battleship’ Trailer Mimics ‘Transformers’ On Shaky Waters
Peter Berg serves up a slippery trailer for toy series adaptation.
On first thought, the idea of a movie based on the toy ‘Battleship’ must seem like the stupidest movie idea in recent history. The same feeling is experience a number of times again, until you decide to maybe give it a chance because it has aliens in it. Now, a confused teaser trailer-ish thing is out that puts you back on shaky grounds.

Peter Berg (Hancock) produces and directs Battleship, an epic action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force. Based on Hasbro’s classic naval combat game, Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, a physical therapist and Hopper’s fiancée; Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd as Hopper’s older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson; Rihanna as Petty Officer Raikes, Hopper’s crewmate and a weapons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones; and international superstar Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone’s superior (and Sam’s father), Admiral Shane.
Universal has sunk (zing!) $200 million into the project and director Peter Berg is making sure that the movie looks exactly like ‘Transformers’ in order to make any money. Here, you see the same young protagonist (Taylor Kitsch) dating an unbelievably hot model (Brooklyn Decker). There’s the same sun flare shots and similar camera angles and the blue/orange tint as well.
As for the trailer itself, it’s weirdly structured to say the least. It actually looks like a rundown of the first act of the movie instead of a trailer and runs more like a recap of a particular sequence in the movie. That said, the special effects do look good and Liam Neeson is bad-ass once again. But can’t say I’m expecting anything other than a shipwreck to me (zing!).
