Me-Movies’ Predictions For The 83rd Academy Awards Tomorrow
Who will win? Who should win? And who might just win? Oscar predictions for Sunday night here!
Best Supporting Actor
The Nominees:
Christian Bale, ‘The Fighter’
John Hawkes, ‘Winter’s Bone’
Jeremy Renner, ‘The Town’
Mark Ruffalo, ‘The Kids Are All Right’
Geoffrey Rush, ‘The King’s Speech’
Who Will Win – Christian Bale
Who Might Win – Geoffrey Rush
Who Should Win – Christian Bale
Commentary – Just watching the trailer for ‘The Fighter’ was enough evidence to know that Christian Bale is finally taking a trophy home. It’s an immense transformation in which Bale completely embodies a real life character in his depiction and this is the exact kind of a performance that Oscars should award. There’s almost no doubt he will win, but the ‘King’s Speech’ momentum might mean that Geoffrey Rush might steal this one away. Although he was a great mentor in the movie, Bale and even Jeremy Renner were easily the highlight of their respective movies.
Best Supporting Actress
The Nominees:
Amy Adams, ‘The Fighter’
Helena Bonham Carter, ‘The King’s Speech’
Melissa Leo, ‘The Fighter’
Hailee Steinfeld, ‘True Grit’
Jacki Weaver, ‘Animal Kingdom’
Who Will Win – Melissa Leo
Who Might Win – Amy Adams/ Hailee Steinfeld
Who Should Win – Melissa Leo
Commentary – This is a category filled with great performances that aren’t so easy to predict. Though common judgement might suggest that Melissa Leo might take this one for her electrifiying performance in ‘The Fighter’ (and it would be totally fair), her recent failed PR moves including taking out Variety ads promoting herself in model pictures is looking to backfire on her and might just give her deserved award to newcomer Hailee Steinfeld in “True Grit’, even though that was clearly a lead performance.
Best Documentary
The Nominees:
‘Exit Through the Gift Shop’
‘Gasland’
‘Inside Job’
‘Restrepo’
‘Waste Land’
What Will Win – Inside Job
What Might Win – Exit Through The Gift Shop
What Should Win – Exit Through The Gift Shop
Commentary – Before I begin, I haven’t had the chance to see ‘Inside Job’ yet and I’ve heard its a very good documentary about the global recession. But even without that, this is a classic case of something Oscar-bait winning the prize instead of a possibly superior and modern film. ‘Exit Through the Gift Shop’ is such a fascinating foray into the world of street art and filled with such twists that you wouldn’t even believe this extraordinary story is a documentary in the first place. It definitely deserves its shot at the Oscars.
Best Animated Feature
The Nominees:
‘How to Train Your Dragon’
‘The Illusionist’
‘Toy Story 3′
Who Will Win – Toy Story 3
Who Might Win – No One Else
Who Should Win – Toy Story 3
Commentary – Can a three-quel of an animated franchise ever be as good? Pixar showed us that it can be the most emotional and perfect of all three with ‘Toy Story 3′, which was not only the biggest hit of the year but also one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year and a fitting finale to the greatest trilogy of all time. Pixar deserves this one even though ‘How to Train your Dragon’ was a great film (still didn’t see ‘The Illusionist’).
