Dimension Films Hires Writers & Director For ‘Piranha 3-D’ Sequel Next Summer

I really enjoyed the hell out of ‘Piranha’ not because of the 3-D (it didn’t bother me but was pretty average at all times) but because it’s the kind of movie we don’t get nowadays – an unbashed gory exercise in campiness that is actually very good at the same time. The box-office was pretty good for a low budget and Dimension Films quickly announced a sequel. Well, there’s suddenly a whole lot more activity on that one.

Deadline reports that Dimension has tapped writers, the writing team behind the last four ‘Saw’ movies and ‘The Collector’ or ‘Feast’, to write a draft for the upcoming sequel titled ‘Piranha 3-D D. John Gulager is the director this time around, and he also directed the ‘Feast’ movies. ‘Feast’ is known as a competent horror/comedy as well, but I really hoped for Aja to return for the sequel since his sensibilities brought a whole new touch to the first film. But this will do as well.
But the best part is the release date which Dimension plans as August of 2011. Not only is that pretty close, but the studio needs to move very quickly with the film meaning that the script has to be delivered in four weeks. Better hurry up on those creative piranha kills!
I don’t see any mention of it going to Thailand this time around like originally believed, but let’s wait and see.
