David Slade Top Choice To Direct ‘Wolverine 2′

I’m not so sure there is a big market to see ‘Wolverine 2′ right now considering the first movie didn’t do too great. Don’t get me wrong – Wolverine is a great character. But he works best as a part of an ensemble rather than a full blown movie about him and I fear they may just be tiring us of the character right now. But if you think 20th Century Fox cares, you are wrong. ‘Wolverine 2′ is already in development and now has a short (very) list of candidates to direct the film.

Vulture reports that the studio has narrowed down two men for the job – David Slade (30 Days of Night, Hard Candy, Twilight Eclipse) and Robert Schwentke (Flightplan, upcoming Red). Slade has gotten great heat after he managed to make a ‘Twilight’ movie halfway decent with some nifty visuals and action sequences, while Schwentke has gotten buzz for ‘Red’ which looks to be the surprise hit of the year.
The studio has both down for directors and the final decision lies with Hugh Jackman himself. Since this is the only big budget franchise that he has ever managed to get, he will be careful about it I hope. Personally, they should give it to Slade as his visual style would match the source material.
The next Wolverine movie will be based on the Wolverine mini-series by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller, which follows Wolverine in Japan where he falls in love with a Japanese woman who is taken already. Taking up conflict with her father, he ends up fighting a lot of sword wielding thugs. Doesn’t sound like a very cinematic plot to me, let alone superhero. But whatever floats their boat.
