With ‘Inception’ making waves in cinemas (and you should definitely check it out), Christopher Nolan can now solely focus on making the next ‘Batman’. With that respect, cinematographer Wally Pfister talks about the third film and gives us some very interesting information.

He talks about the fact that Riddler could be the prime villain of the new film and that Joseph Gordon Levitt could be playing him. This was later confirmed by FirstShowing who got hold of a casting grid which showed the Riddler and JGL as ‘interested’ for the part. I’ve been following the kid for ages and he is brilliant as an actor and stole the show in ‘Inception’. And a villainous turn in one of the biggest movies ever would be the best thing to happen to him.
Also, he talks about the possibility of shooting all of ‘Batman 3′ in IMAX format. Pfister tells MTV that the idea for going all IMAX for ‘Inception’ was touched upon. However it was a very mobile and faster paced film to shoot with the bulky and heavy IMAX cameras:
“That’s just not physically possible with the IMAX camera. We ruled out shooting in IMAX.”
But he would love to shoot the third Batman completely in IMAX:
“I must say I’m a huge IMAX fan. I like IMAX more than I like 3-D…Chris’ films are so densely layered and have so much going on visually in every way that IMAX helps enhance that because of the scope and the scale of it — it becomes a much larger canvas to paint on. That’s what we found on ‘Dark Knight’…I’m not a big fan of 3-D…I liken it to my View-Master I had 40 years ago. Are you really getting more out of the story with 3-D? When you separate those different planes and you’re creating artificial depth, it looks phony to me.”
The IMAX sequences were a great sell for ‘The Dark Knight’ and I can see ‘Batman 3′ taking that further. Only question is – will Nolan mind shooting it that way? We’ll have to wait and see.
We’ll keep you updated.
