In news that can arguably counted among the most geek-pleasing in quite some time, Peter Jackson has finally agreed to direct ‘The Hobbit’ and is in negotations at the moment.

Deadline reports that talks with in order are in order. The series has a long developlment history as Guillermo Del Toro was set to direct both the films soon. But MGM never had any money to make the film, and Del Toro tired of waiting. He left the project to pursue others, which brought on the possibility that producer Peter Jackson would take direction duties if his other contracts are let go. Rumors for upcoming directors included David Yates and Neill Blomkamp but nothing was ever confirmed.
Reports suggest that now that he’s directing, MGM has been told to quicken the proceedings and start shooting by the end of the year for a 2012 and 2013 release. It’s great news for the fans that wanted the director of the LOTR movies to step up and finish what he started. His vision of Middle Earth will undoubtedly help the movie. I’d like to salute the guy for listening to his fans. Knighthood well deserved.
We’ll keep you updated of the proceedings.
