Thanks to MGM’s ever-growing financial troubles, one of the biggest upcoming movies ‘The Hobbit’ is in major trouble. Director Guillermo Del Toro left the project earlier since nothing was happening, and Peter Jackson still stayed on board as producer and writer. A rumored director for the project included David Yates (Harry Potter 5-7). But looks like the studios want the master to return to his franchise.

Deadline reports that Warner Bros. and MGM are trying to talk Peter Jackson himself into helming the Hobbit films. It makes sense for him to finish what he started and no one else can do it better than him. But the only problem? Jackson said it before:
If [directing the films is] what I have to do to protect Warner Bros’ investment, then obviously that’s one angle which I’ll explore…The other studios may not let me out of the contracts.
He has ‘Tintin’ upcoming and a number of other movies that will keep him busy for quite a long time. If only they let him off those contracts, he can possibly direct the movies if he wants to. But there is a reason he should do it – the other rumored directors are David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers, Fred Claus), and Brett Ratner (X-Men 3, Rush Hour). Any one of those can single-handledly ruin the franchise, so I would take Jackson or even David Yates over them any day.
