The Witcher season 3 review

Netflix’s highly-popular epic fantasy series, The Witcher, just premiered the first five episodes of season 3, with the final three episodes scheduled for release on the 27th of July. Adapted from the beloved novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, the series became an instant hit with fans when it first dropped on the streamer four years ago, mostly thanks to its lead actor, Henry Cavill. Sadly, this is the last season featuring Cavill as the titular White Wolf, Gerald of Rivia, with Liam Hemsworth confirmed to take over in future instalments.

After the massive cliffhanger reveals at the end of season 2 that the Nilfgaardian Emperor Emhyr var Emreis (Bart Edwards) is none other than Duny, Ciri’s presumed dead father, season three starts relatively peacefully. Geralt (Cavill), Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), and Ciri (Freya Allan) are travelling across the and hiding from the evil mage, Rience (Sam Woolf, who took over the role from Chris Fulton).

The Witcher

All is not well, at first, between Geralt and Yennefer because of her betrayal from last season, but the sorceress is working hard to rebuild the trust. She is training Ciri to gain control of her magic, and the three settle into a family-like routine.

Of course, their peaceful life doesn’t last, and the three are forced to separate. While Geralt heads to a castle where he might find some answers about who Rience is working for, Yennefer takes Ciri back to Aretuza to be trained by her former mentor, Tissaia (MyAnna Buring).

A promising first half of the season

This is The Witcher, there are subplots within subplots within subplots, and nothing ever gets fully resolved. Despite the huge reveal at the end of season two, we don’t see much of the Nilfgaardian Emperor in the first five episodes, but he may just become a more visible figure in Volume 2.

It also seems everyone has separate reasons to want to get their hands on Ciri. For some, it’s to do with prophecy, while for others, she’s little more than a tool for complex political machinations. A lot is happening on the divided Continent, and it can be hard to keep up.

The three main leads have evolved, which shows in their conduct this season. Freya Allan has grown into her own as Ciri; watching the character grow from the frightful little girl in season one to the brave young warrior in season three is a delight. Anya Chalotra’s Yennefer has also turned a new leaf this season. Instead of dealing with her sterility by causing magical chaos, she’s putting all her motherly instincts into helping and protecting Ciri.

But Henry Cavill is holding the whole thing together with his portrayal of Geralt. It’s hard to imagine this show without him, and it’s even harder to picture another actor playing the eponymous White Wolf. Cavill brings a charm to the broody mutant with a heart of gold that will be nearly impossible to recreate.

Judging solely by volume 1, season 3 may be the best one yet. In a way, the previous two seasons were just the build-up for this one. We saw the three main characters become who they are, we saw them meet each other, and we saw the relationships between them form. Now, they are finally together in the same timeline and about to face their most difficult challenge.

The Witcher is a fun-to-watch immersive fantasy, and season three exceeded my expectations. Let’s hope the final three episodes don’t prove underwhelming.
