4.5 million units sold worldwide; Ultimate Team to launch in new year.

Press release:
Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced the continued record-setting sales pace for FIFA 10 as well as the development of FIFA 10 Ultimate Team, a game mode expansion and new way of playing FIFA 10, the highest rated sports game* ever on the PlayStation®3 and Xbox 360®.

Based on internal sales projections, FIFA 10 has sold through more than 4.5 million units worldwide since launch, a 26 percent increase over the same period a year ago (eight weeks in Europe and five weeks in North America). FIFA 10 also became the fastest-selling sports videogame in the world with 1.7 million units sold through at European retail in its first week after its launch on October 1, and it’s the top selling game overall in Europe in 2009.

FIFA 10 has achieved new franchise records for online play as well, averaging 3 million** games played daily and over 113 million^ total online games played on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 over the past two months, and will launch FIFA 10 Ultimate Team in the new year. FIFA 10 Ultimate Team is a deeper, more authentic, more dynamic version of the game mode successfully introduced last year and enables fans to customize the way they build their Ultimate Team.

Take on the challenge of building an Ultimate Team of the best football stars in the world, manage one or multiple squads simultaneously, and compete against other gamers in dynamically updated online tournaments. For the record number of football fans playing FIFA 10 online, FIFA 10 Ultimate Team provides a new challenge to put a personally crafted team up against the rest of the world.

“FIFA 10 Ultimate Team adds a lot more authenticity to a unique game that will update with new challenges and content over time,” said Producer Paul Hossack. “We now have over 7,000 players from 27 leagues available, from which gamers will craft one or multiple squads to show their mastery of the revamped, more realistic chemistry system, and compete in tournaments with exciting requirements and rewards. On top of that, we’ll release new tournaments and other updates regularly to keep the experience fresh and exciting.”

FIFA 10 Ultimate Team has more options and players that enable gamers to emulate the way real-world coaches and managers build the truly great football teams. Choose how to manage your team–-focusing on creating one formidable squad, or managing multiple squads to match dynamic requirements for tournaments and competitions. Buy, sell, trade and acquire the biggest stars to build your dream team. Be strategic and tactical in preparing your squads for the various in-game competitions. A completely redesigned chemistry system built around player relationships on the pitch, means that managing teams and squads to their full potential is even more critical to success. Take carefully assembled squads into standard tournaments and themed competitions against the most formidable teams from around the world – and then out wit and out play them.

A nearly perfect all around winner.

In real life football terms, the FIFA series went from a struggling Liverpool team of the 90s to a promising Arsenal team ending up as a powerful Man UTD team. That right there is a big shift in attitude caused only by the excellence of the last few games in the series. The improvements started in FIFA 07 where everyone that played the game noticed something different about the series. FIFA 08 added even more features and was the best football game for that year. FIFA 09 basically killed off the competition, leaving other football games buried in the dust. One would expect the developers of the series to relax. After all, most of their goals were met. They managed impressive sales figures worldwide and took over as the best football game in the world. Luckily for us earlier this year EA Sports announced a whole set of new features for FIFA 10. And oh boy, they delivered this time as well.

Let’s forget all the new modes, moves and features and just concentrate on the gameplay. FIFA 10 is as close as many of us will come to playing top class football week in and week out. As you might have heard before, strength is a very important attribute this year. Bigger players will manage to squeeze through more often with faster players having a harder time, but that only makes the whole game more interesting. Forcing your fast player through with a low through pass will fail unless you actually aim now. Yes, you have to carefully watch the flow of the game, based on your game plan, and wait for the player to run the route. Playing the Arsenal 4-3-3 tactic, the wide players in Walcott, Clichy, Sagna and Arshavin look and act like the smartest bunch of video games characters we have ever seen. That’s if you manage to feed them the ball at the right time. Slower, more creative players like Fabregas and Barry are way more influential this time around. Remember these nifty through passes a 3rd division player could execute in FIFA 09? Now only the best players can guarantee a dangerous attacking move every time down the field.

All the new additions to the gameplay fit in just perfectly. The dribbling moves will catch some eyes and will certainly help you secure a few nice runs towards the goal. The whole gameplay certainly improved however, and that’s what everyone that plays this game will notice instantly. One obvious improvement compared to FIFA 09 is the 360 dribbling. Last year, a player running one on one against the GK can only run straight in one direction. That applies to the defender running behind him as well. This year though, you need to press a few more buttons to register a goal scored. First you have to run in the correct direction, the defender behind you will be trying to flunk you from every side, so moving in the right direction is crucial. The way you move the player and at what speed can result in you losing the ball, making a pass to a better positioned player or scoring that goal with style.

One much talked about new feature is the set piece editor, and that comes out as a fantastic addition to the gameplay. You no longer have to count on luck to step in every time you earn a free kick or corner. Using the editor you can instruct your best players to move and run in the exact direction and movement you wish or stand in a certain position waiting to head the ball home. I was absolutely thrilled scoring my first Arsenal goal thanks to a perfect header by Vermaelen from a well placed Van Persie corner.

One frustrating aspect about the gameplay this year is the goal keepers. They seem to get caught out of position a few times too often, with some failing to hold on easy shots. Once a striker is set free for a one on one chance, the GKs tend to get out of goal without permission. Keep in mind how small this is of an issue, proving how great the gameplay department is here. Other little issues on the field include the referee himself for two reasons. First, the ball hits the referee way too often in FIFA 10. In real life, if the midfield is swarming with players, the refs usually take a back seat, watching the action carefully from distance. In FIFA 10 though, the refs are a bit too close to the action watching your every little move resulting in some intercepted passes. The other issue is the foul calling. Some calls are quite questionable and penalties are awarded based on the ref’s mood for the day it seems. Again, a realistic yet annoying feature that we applaud the developers for having in the first place. Things can get pretty ugly and dramatic now with the AI going in for harder tackles, giving the refs something to think about. Booking for handballs and diving is yet to be seen in FIFA, something we would like added in the near future.

Another issue that we cannot blame the developers for, but is still frustrating, is how many times the ball hits the post in a game. Fine, if you do watch live football every week you will notice many balls hitting the woodwork. Last season, Arsenal alone had a record of over 20 shots hitting the post, so yes it does happen quite often. We are not saying every shot has to either hit the back of the net or miss the target, but the number of times the ball hits the post should be limited somehow per game, making the game less frustrating and resulting in less broken disks and controllers.

Three goals I scored while playing the FIFA 10 demo in the past few days. I am not saying the goals are great, I actually scored better goals in the demo but these stand out.

Check them out:

Chelsea 1 – 0 Juventus:

The Goal shows off the promised 360 dribble moves. Watch as Drogba manages to get the better of the defender by dribbling a little higher towards the goal.

Chelsea 2 – 0 Chicago Fire:

A GK mistake that i thought made the game a lot more realistic. As annoying as they might be, we haven’t seen enough mental mistakes by GKs in FIFA 09.

Barcelona 2 – 1 OM:

This shows off the strength I talked about before. Ibra challenged the defender on the wing, snatched the ball and scored a last minute winner. Drama!

After a few hours with both the demos, lets just say we are impressed!

What a night. After going a full day without FIFA 09 a pleasant surprise in the form of two demos was waiting for me online. Both the FIFA 10 and PES 10 demos were up and waiting for me to check them out. And just like last year, Arsenal was not to be found on either of the demos.. Grrrr

Starting off with FIFA 10, it’s clear that the game has changed. The player’s physics and design had slightly changed to accommodate some other changes in the game. And one of those changes is the physical play. While speed dominated FIFA 09 with players like Walcott and Eto owning the scene, this year players like Ibra and Drogba are going to be more powerful than ever. In a game I was playing as Barca against Juve, Ibra was fed a thru pass by Henry with a defender close behind him. The defender was faster but Ibra managed to overpower him and push his way through to the goal.

FIFA 10 is up and ready to run

Playing the FIFA 10 demo over and over again I noticed how the referees are way too strict this year. They will call almost every little foul; hopefully something will be done about this before the final release of the game.

The final thing I am going to mention about FIFA 10 is the passing game, both offensively and defensively. Passing the ball is going to need a little more effort and concentration this year because defenders will actually try their best to block your passes. Every time I attempted a quick thru pass to set a striker free, the defender extended his leg to block the pass. Impressive.

PES 10 too had its share of changes. The game is clearly easier to control. Shots are no longer too sensitive to the direction of the player and I managed to hit the back of the net a number of times per game.

Improved in the game is the players design. I started off the demo with a game as Spain Vs France. The first thing I noticed is the Arsenal players on the field. Sagna, Fabregas and Nasri looked simply perfect. Playing as Barca later, guys like Henry and Messi looked really impressive. Messi even comes with his own running style.

Better than real life

I am actually happy to say that both games managed to impress me. Both demos featured improved graphics and gameplay and each game concentrated on its own weaknesses and improved its strengths. Picking one game over the other is going to be really hard for me right now, and what I thought was a runaway win for FIFA 10 might be slightly harder than expected.

Look out for the review for both games as soon as they hit stores next month!

The FIFA 10 demo is now officially out for the rest of the world to enjoy. PAL region PS3s and Xbox 360s have had the luxury of testing out this title for almost a week now. But starting from now everyone else can do so too.

FIFA 09 was easily one of the best sports games ever released in my books. So words cannot possibly explain how much i want to get my hands on this one!

Watch this space for my take on the demo later today.
