Attacker played up his World of Warcraft addiction to isolate himself to plot the attack.

Anders Behring Breivik, the terrorist who killed over 85 people in a horrific attack in Norway on Friday, suggested to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to hone one’s combat skills in a 1,500 page manifesto written by him. He also said a World of Warcraft addiction is a good cover-up story to isolate oneself to secretly plot attacks without anybody digging in too much.

“I just bought Modern Warfare 2, the game,” he writes, under the name “Andrew Berwick”. “It is probably the best military simulator out there and it’s one of the hottest games this year. … I see MW2 more as a part of my training-simulation than anything else. I’ve still learned to love it though and especially the multiplayer part is amazing. You can more or less completely simulate actual operations.”

“Simulation by playing Call of Duty, Modern Warfare is a good alternative as well but you should try to get some practise with a real assault rifle (with red point optic) if possible,” he writes under a section titled “Marksmanship Training”.

To avoid any suspicion, Brevik suggested to play up a World of Warcraft addiction, saying “using social taboos is an extremely effective method from preventing people who know you well from digging too much.”

“F[or] example, tell them that you have started to play World of Warcraft or any other online MMO game and that you wish to focus on this for the next months/year,” Breivik writes. “This “new project” can justify isolation and people will understand somewhat why you are not answering your phone over long periods. Tell them that you are completely hooked on the game (raiding dungeons etc).”

“You will be amazed on how much you can do undetected while blaming this game,” he continues. “If your planning requires you to travel, say that you are visiting one of your WoW friends, or better yet, a girl from your “guild” (who lives in another country). No further questions will be raised if you present these arguments.”

Breivik also mentions playing Fallout 3, Bioshock 2 and Dragon Age: Origins, however with no relations to training. A copy of the manifesto was posted by Kevin Slaughter as a Google Doc link from his twitter account.

Will address security online issues on all platforms.

Infinity Ward has announced they’ll release a patch for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for all platforms.

The patch is detailed to address ”security issues that have affected online play”, Infinity Ward’s Creative Strategist, Robert Bowling aka fourzerotwo, has announced on the game’s forum.

The security patch is going through its final testing process, and should be ready soon for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The patch is ought to address MW2’s exploits on the PlayStation 3, due to GeoHot’s recent Jail Break, as reported.

Seems like Modern Warfare 2 will finally be hack-free for a while, well, until hackers strike again.

Robert Bowling confers “promises”.

Infinity Manager Community Management boss, Robert Bowling has promised Modern Warfare 2 players that the company won’t ignore them, and he assured that they are working to fix the latest exploits and hacks plagued in the PlayStation 3 version of the game.

PlayStation 3 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has been recently besieged by hacks. Infinity Ward didn’t react to the major violation occurred in the multiplayer component of the first-person shooter, stating that they can’t patch up the problems until Sony solves PS3’s recent security breach.

However, in an update on Infinity Ward forums, here’s what Bowling had to say.

“I just left a security meeting with the coders here at Infinity Ward where we discussed a lot of solutions,” he wrote. “I feel good about the meeting, but of course I can’t go into detail on the possible solutions we discussed as we don’t want to give out any information that could potentially hinder the security any further.

“The key factor I want you to know is, that while any update takes time, we are looking to make the process as quick as possible and nothing is being left unattended.”

“Our main focus right now is on preventing hackers from affecting legitimate players and addressing users who have already been affected.”

Activision released Call of Duty: Black Ops later last year on November, the PlayStation 3 version of the game reportedly had severe issues different from the Modern Warfare 2 exploits. Treyarch attempted to resolve the problems by releasing numerous patches.

Issues awesome apology.

There is an old saying that says whatever happens, happens for the good. That is especially true when you are mistakenly banned from a video game by a little company called Valve. Why? Because they know how to get things straight.

Valve’s Anti-Cheat System did a googly recently and banned a number of players from Modern Warfare 2. Quick on their toes, Valve immediately issued an apology, and to calm furious gaming nerves gave them the best antidote known to gamers: zombies.

“Hello, recently, your Steam account was erroneously banned from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. This was our mistake, and I apologize for any frustration or angst it may have caused you,” read a message from Gabe Newell to those who were given the boot.

“We have reversed the ban, restoring your access to the game. In addition, we have given you a free copy of Left 4 Dead 2 to give as a gift on Steam, plus a free copy for yourself if you didn’t already own the game.”

That’s how it’s played, gentlemen.

Five-map "Resurgence Pack" arrives on Xbox LIVE on June 3rd.

Activision and Infinity Ward has announced the second map pack for its super-selling first person shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

The ‘Resurgence Pack’ will feature five maps and will arrive first on Xbox Live on June 3rd, 2010. The announcement offered no further details. No word has been said if the five maps will be new ones or reworked from COD4. There is no details on the pricing too, but we know it will be priced about the same as the first DLC pack.

Recently, during its Q1 financial conference call, publisher Activision had announced that the first DLC offering, the ‘Stimulus Map Pack’, sold 17 million units on the Xbox 360 alone.

Second map pack DLC planned, to release in second half of 2010.

During its Q1 financial conference call, publisher Activision announced that the ‘Stimulus’ DLC for its popular shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sold 17 million units – a figure which does not include the sales of the PS3 version! Holy snakes!

And to no ones surprise, Activision also announced that they will be keeping the DLC rolling with a second map pack planned for release sometime in the second half of 2010.

“With respect to the Call of Duty franchise,” said Thomas Tippl, CFO, “we plan to release the second Map Pack for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, which is currently in development at Infinity Ward.”

He also suggested that the second DLC pack will too carry the same $15 price tag (you don’t say!).

“With regard to the Map Pack, I think they’ve been selling incredibly well. As you know, we’ve expanded the number of maps that we are providing as part of that release. And therefore, the $15 price point has still provided a fantastic value to gamers and is also evidenced by the billions of hours that people are playing the game online. So we think that has worked.”
