"Valve has no right to the registration it seeks."

Here’s the backlog of history before we dive into this story: Blizzard made Warcraft III. The ever-awesome mod community made a mod for it called Defense of the Ancients (or DotA). The mod became extremely popular, prompting Blizzard to pour in resources to develop and prompt the mod, as their own, for seven years. In 2010, the mod-loving Valve thought to develop a sequel for DotA and actively set forth in that direction, promoting it via tournaments, inviting professional players and what not. Blizzard didn’t quite like that.

The World of Warcraft makers has now decided to sue over the registration of the name, claiming that “Valve has no right” over it as “the DotA mark has become firmly associated in the mind of consumers with Blizzard.

This is their official statement:
“In contrast to Blizzard, Applicant Valve Corporation (“Valve”) has never used the mark DOTA in connection with any product or service that currently is available to the public. By attempting to register the mark DOTA, Valve seeks to appropriate the more than seven years of goodwill that Blizzard has developed in the mark DOTA and in its Warcraft III computer game and take for itself a name that has come to signify the product of years of time and energy expended by Blizzard and by fans of Warcraft III. Valve has no right to the registration it seeks. If such registration is issued, it not only will damage Blizzard, but also the legions of Blizzard fans that have worked for years with Blizzard and its products, including by causing consumers to falsely believe that Valve’s products are affiliated, sponsored or endorsed by Blizzard and are related or connected to Warcraft III.”

The case file was submitted on November 16, 2011. You can read it here.

SEGA has put out on the internet a rather elegant cover art of Aliens: Colonial Marines, the upcoming Gearbox Software-developed sci-fi FPS.

As the game’s title suggests, the box art of the game is somewhat predictable – albeit it looks delicious. It features an Alien and a team of Marines. Voila!

The often-delayed Aliens shooter is bound for an official disclosure sometime in fall 2012. The game is being developed for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

And that too at only 30fps.

Here’s a bit of news for those looking to experience Alan Wake on the PC. Tech site PC Games Hardware has benchmarked Remedy’s survival shooter across a range of low to high end graphics cards, and the result is pretty obvious: you will need enough juice to run the game at its prettiest best.

As you can see, to run the game at 1080p @30fps, you will need at least a NVIDIA GTX 460 and a pretty high-end processor, to boot. The website used a top of the range i7-26000K. Even AMD HD7970, which is currently the world’s fastest GPU, seems barely able to scratch past the 60 fps mark.

Is your PC mighty enough to take on this beast of the night? Alan Wake releases on February 16th for the PC.

By that we mean one day.

This is pretty incredible. Less than 24 hours ago, Double Fine announced a Kickstarter campaign to privately fund its upcoming point-and-click adventure title. The project aimed to raise $400,000, and when we reported about it only a few hours back, the project had already amassed $211,778.

The number has jumped to $427,272 at the time of writing, achieving its goal in less than a day. Nearly 10,000 fans have donated money for the project – a be super-collaboration between studio head Tim Schafer and Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert.

The campaign will continue until March 13, as originally planned. The extra bit collected will be used to fund company holidays, Schafer’s new Mercedes and a new candy dispenser.

We are just joking. Right, Schafer? Right?

Skyrim seems to have all the ingredients that could stage an epic, Medieval style armor-clashing, sword-bashing, no-guts no-glory kind of war. But it doesn’t have any of that. Not even one.

But then, we have the modding community and they seem to take care of each others needs. An epic armor-clashing, sword-bashing, no-guts no-glory kind of war was in immediate need (apparently) and so a group of modders got together, over some mead maybe, to create just that. They employed 500 Draugr, 200 skeletons and 500 Dwarvens Warriors, through console commands and various mods, and let them loose.

They are calling ‘The Great Battle of Skyrim’. I have no doubt about that.

Dragon mounts, anyone?

Advanced home building, ice and fire arrows, goblins, Kinect dragon shouts – these were some of the DLC ideas Bethesda came up with after a company-wide ‘Game Jam’ session for Skyrim was held a week after the game’s launch.

Mounted combat. Want.

The ideas were revealed by creative director Todd Howard during the DICE 2012 summit yesterday. Howard stressed that they were all “experimental” and he had “no idea if they will be released as DLC”. He further added “maybe, we don’t know”.

The extensive list of DLC ideas are published below (thanks, Wired):

Seasonal Foliage
Flow-based water shader
Spears
Kill Cams for Magic and Ranged Combat
Stealth Enhancements
Guards can relight darkened areas
Paralysis runes
Dungeon enhancements : handing structures and moving platforms
Water currents in dungeons
Dark dungeons
New commands for followers: Combat style, etc.
Set favorite equipment settings for followers
Adopt a child
Build your own home
…with a skeleton butler
Spell combinations: Use flame and raise zombie to create a fire zombie
Goblins
High-level Draugrs
“Waygates” for fast travel
Epic mounts (flaming death horse)
Mounted combat
Dragon mounts
“Soul bug” familiar
Kinect voice-activated shouts
Screen space ambient occlusion
Enhanced underwater visuals
Snow surface
Fat giants
Ice and Fire arrows
Werebear
Lycanthropy skill tree
Vampire Feeding
Become a flying vampire lord
Vampire Imp Minions
Mudcrab animation tweaks
Giant mudcrab enemy

Some of these are already possible with mods, if you are up for that sort of thing (you should be). There are already mods that improves foliage, water effects, and darkens dungeons. I am surprised there is not one that allows mounted combat yet.

Resurrected sandbox actioner due out in second half of 2012.

Sleeping Dogs, formerly known as True Crime: Hong Kong, has been officially renamed and re-announced by Square Enix.

The open-world actioner is on track for release in the second half of 2012 on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, with original developer United Front Games being on board this time collaborating with Square Enix London Studios.

Square Enix picked up the publishing rights of the game from Activision in August. This comes following the publishing giant’s decision of axing the project in early 2011. Obviously, retitling the sandbox shooter was expected considering that Square Enix does not own the True Crime IP.

“From the moment you pick up the controller and experience the blend of driving, close combat and shooting you know you’re playing something fresh and a bit special,” said Lee Singleton, general manager of Square Enix London Studios. “Sleeping Dogs has one of the best melee combat systems out there – it’s super brutal with devastating takedown moves, and when added to UFG’s proven heritage in driving games, a first class story and the vibrant backdrop of the Hong Kong underworld we get a fiery recipe with fun written all over it.”

A wicked live-action trailer has been released to mark the announcement. Check it below.
