And you thought gaming was just a pastime.

While most of us (well hopefully most of us) put an effort into staying physically active by going to the gym, jogging, or doing some kind of activity to get our blood going, we often forget to flex our brain cells as well. Too often we relay on shortcuts and digital assistants to help us remember things – I for one cannot remember my house landline number off the top of my head because it’s on speed dial on my phone.

So rather than let age get the better of her mind, 100 year old Kathleen Connell keeps her mind sharp by skipping the knitting needles and firing up her Nintendo DS. She attributes the handheld to keeping her brain active, despite often not being able to remember things the next day.

Check out the screen-tapping action in the video below:

EA’s FIFA 12 did hold still at No.1 in this week’s outlined list of top selling games in the UK – that’s for the sixth consecutive week for you!

Meanwhile, perhaps the biggest release of the month, Resident Evil Revelations, made its debut at No. 6. Bear in mind that Capcom’s portable survival-horror offering released on Friday – so better give it a week, and here’s a least hoping it scares away Ubisoft’s Just Dance 3, which rounded up at No. 4.

Modern Warfare 3’s seat remained intact in the first three spots, however replacing Bethesda’s masterpiece, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, with the latter dropping to No.3.

Full chart list below.

1 – FIFA 12
2 – Modern Warfare 3
3 – The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
4 – Just Dance 3
5 – Battlefield 3
6 – Resident Evil: Revelations
8 – Saints Row: The Third

Survival horror down to $39.99 even though it ships on a 4GB card.

Capcom has confirmed that it will cut $10 off the initially pegged price tag for Resident Evil Revelations.

Explaining the reason behind the price drop, Capcom issued a statement on its own Capcom-Unity blog, saying that “after weeks of effort” they took a decision that should please buyers and potential consumers alike – reducing $10 from the survival horror title, which means now it should cost $39.99 instead of $49.99.

Capcom hopes this decision “will encourage even more people to check out this strong entry in the Resident Evil canon.”

Resident Evil Revelations is due January 27 in Europe, February 7 in the US, exclusively for the 3DS.

Kid Icarus for the Nintendo 3DS will be available in stores starting March 23.

For those who don’t know, Kid Icarus was one of the very first games to be presented for the Nintendo 3D device. Kid Icarus will be compatible with the handheld’s external control peripheral, the Circle Pad Pro, allowing for an alternative control layout for left-handed users.

“Kid Icarus: Uprising uses a control scheme designed to fit the game’s unique blend of flight, shooting and melee combat, and offers tremendous precision, speed and depth that rewards dedicated players. The left hand uses the Circle Pad, while the right uses a stylus, both at the same time,” explains Nintendo. “Every copy of the game will come with a free stand that holds the Nintendo 3DS at an angle above any flat surface, and provides players with a new kind of gaming experience.”

Nintendo says that all copies of Kid Icarus: Uprising will include a 3DS stand.

It launches on Nintendo’s 3DS in the US on March 30. In Europe, it’s expected to reach stores on March 16. The release date of the PS Vita version has already been confirmed for February 14 – thus it launches a week before the console hits western shelves.

Who said smartphones replaced handhelds? Sony relates to Nintendo’s persistence.

Sony Computer Entertainment president and chief executive Andrew House is relating to how good rival portable console the 3DS is doing sales wise, laying out how this is a proof that gaming handhelds can still prevail in the industry.

“Normally we don’t really reference the competition a lot when we talk about the PlayStation business, but in this case it’s perhaps a little salutary that the sales of the 3DS – you know, having the advantage of releasing a little bit ahead of us – have been exceedingly good,” he told the US PlayStation Blog at CES.

“I think that shows that there is in general a lot of demand for a gaming primary portable device, which is how I would describe Vita,” he added.

He also mentioned how Sony’s PS Vita is different and what type of audience it’s bound to target.

“But you know, our device in contrast has just so much more to offer. What I think we’ve done is point to a market that really has started out with potentially casual games that are on other devices, but now wants a deeper, a better or more premiere gaming experiences.”

The PlayStation Vita launches worldwide on February 22. You can find the entire interview below.

Konami has revealed the official release date for Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D, the Nintendo 3DS iteration of PS2 classic title. It launches on February 21 in the US and March 8 in Europe.

Konami says that the 3DS version of Snake Eater will feature support for the Nintendo 3DS Circle Pad Pro peripheral. The game boasts revamped graphics, and for the first time, you’ll obviously accomplish Snake’s stealth affairs in 3D.

Players will be given the ability to use their real-life photos to make camo clothing for Snake, this however, will be effective if it blends with the scenery, which depends on the colors of the photo. A mix between green and black should do well I guess.

Another journey awaiting Link after Skyward Sword.

The Legend of Zelda will continue, with a new installment currently in development according to series producer Eiji Aonuma.

The producer’s statement was spotted in the final pages of the recently released Legend of Zelda Hyrule Historia. Aonuma confirmed that more games from the series would follow. Even though that wasn’t literally what he said, there’s clearly a cunning clue left in between.

“The long sailing time of creating Skyward Sword, a game to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Zelda series, has just come to an end”, Aonuma says. (As translated by GlitterBerri)

“The voices of those who’ve played it from around the world reach us. We hear their admiration, comments and their criticism too. All those voices become energy for the next voyage. Well, to tell the truth, we’ve already set sail in a new voyage.”

Of course, at this point, it’s vague what Anouma was teasing for; perhaps the long-rumored new Legend of Zelda for the 3DS? Maybe a next-generation title for Nintendo’s upcoming home console the Wii U? Any thoughts?

Is now the right time?

I have been a proud owner of a Nintendo 3DS since the 2nd week of its launch. I have checked out and reviewed tons of titles for it and have spent a lot of time gaming on the platform. Along with the recent rise of interest in the console lots of people are debating whether or not to go ahead and make a purchase. To me the answer is simple and hopefully by the end of the blog you will have a good idea about what the current state of the Nintendo 3DS is.

The first thing people are worrying about when they think of buying a 3DS is that a redesign is coming out soon. Lots of people are afraid that they will make the purchase now only to find out that a redesign is released a couple of months from now. To that I say, I don’t think that will happen this year. The main reason behind my thoughts is that Nintendo has its hands full with the Wii U which is launching sometime in the second half of the year. I don’t think they want to launch a new 3DS model at the same time period. An announcement of a redesign might come in by the end of the year, but I don’t think that the new redesign will be sold till early 2013.

Now that that’s out of the way let’s talk about what matters: the device itself and the games. The hardware of the 3DS is fairly solid except for disappointing battery life. I personally had no problems with the hardware and everything ran smoothly without any hiccups. To further enhance the capabilities of the 3DS Nintendo has announced the 2nd circle pad add-on. The add-on will enable you to play with two circle pads if the game you are playing supports it. Although there has been mixed responses from the 2nd circle pad add-on, its entirely optional and its up to you whether or not you want a 2nd circle pad.

Back when the 3DS launched there were barely any good titles on the system and most of the time my unit just sat there collecting dust. However, the 3DS is now building up quite an awesome library of games especially with Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 released near the end of last year. In addition Nintendo has already filled the 1st half 2012 with greatly anticipated titles such as Resident Evil: Revelations, Tales of the Abyss 3D, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater 3D as well as many others. Nintendo is also making way for tons of great content from the eShop as well. Virtual console titles such as Link’s Awakening as well as original eShop titles such as Pushmo are awesome games that are definitely worth checking out.

The 3DS is a great platform to play on. Sure it might not have the console like graphics, but it’s the quality of the games that matters and right now the 3DS is on a high stride. Ocarina of time 3D, Super Mario 3D Land, and Mario Kart 7 are fantastic titles to start with while Resident Evil: Revelations and Kid Icarus: Uprising have tons of promise behind them. If you are looking for something on the go that can provide you with rich game experiences then the 3DS is a great platform that should not be dismissed simply due to a rocky start.
