GameStop’s system certainly think so.

Enamored by Mass Effect 3′s magnificent hype, our horde-master (he is also called Editor-in-chief) Abbas caved in and bought the game. He hasn’t played Mass Effect 2 yet, but that didn’t stop him. He is also a Diablo nut. Naturally, then, he must go about asking for a release date at random intervals to random people.

Out of curiosity (let’s just call it that for the sake of my job), he popped the question to this GameStop employee who was processing his Mass Effect 3 order. The employee fired off short, precise bursts on the keyboard and out came the reply: May 1st, 2012.

Is it, so? We aren’t quite sure yet. Amazon’s regional website, Amazon Italy, recently ran the date of April 17 as the day when heavens could potentially tremble, but Blizzard didn’t get enough feelers that, may be, probably, now would be a great time to come out with a release date. So they have kept mum.

So yes, take this with whatever it is that you take with.

May 1 is not by any means an actual release date. Take it from someone with first-hand knowledge on GameStop’s POS system that all games available for pre-order MUST have a date next to them in the operating system, so in the case of games with no official release date, a “placeholder” date is used, usually the first of a month. Until Blizzard announces a date, there is no other way to be sure. That GameStop employee was probably still green, as most of them tend to be.

If the Gamestop employee has no sense of gaming pop culture, he WOULD say May 1st.  If he keeps up on game journalism, AS YOU SHOULD BE SINCE YOU’RE A GAME JOURNALIST, you would know that there hasn’t been a release date, and friggin’ Gamestop, much less one of its random employees, would not know this information first.
