Sources close to MCVUK has claimed that Microsoft’s next Xbox, rumoredly codenamed Durango, will not feature a disc drive.

Instead, Durango “will offer compatibility with some sort of interchangeable solid-state card storage, although it is not known whether this will be proprietary or a more standard format such as SD.”

The console will release in 2013 and information pertaining to it are under “the strictest NDA”, the source added.

If the reports are true, this will be an odd choice for Microsoft to make. While digital distribution is certainly picking up, there is a large part of the gaming mass that does not have access to/cannot afford faster Internet connection, or just still prefer a physical copy. Also, what about backward compatibility? Blu-ray? DVD?
