Mass Effect 3 will not be on Steam
“Restrictive” Steam not considered.
It doesn’t seem Electronic Arts and Valve have made any efforts to bury their differences. Last year, EA pulled out of Steam after Valve disallowed direct content-feed to users within the game itself. The spat saw Battlefield 3 to never release on the popular platform, and now it seems Mass Effect 3 will be joining the list as well.
In a FAQ posted by BioWare’s Chris Priestly, Origin will be required for both physical and digital copies of the game. Steam was not considered due to their “set of restrictive terms of service”.
Is Origin required for the retail versions of the game?
Origin is required for the PC versions of Mass Effect 3, both physical and digital.
Will ME3 be available on Steam?
During initial release Mass Effect 3 will be available on Origin and a number of other 3rd party digital retailers, but not on Steam at this time. Steam has adopted a set of restrictive terms of service which limit how developers interact with customers to deliver patches and other downloadable content. We are intent on providing Mass Effect to players with the best possible experience no matter where they purchase or play their game, and are happy to partner with any download service that does not restrict our ability to connect directly with our consumers.
It won’t affect my purchase of Mass Effect 3 on the PC. I honestly don’t believe EA installs spyware with Origin and will knock on your door for any sort of piracy. However, it is understandable the apprehensive of other people and it is unfortunate that the two companies have not yet found a proper solution to the problem.
