New Xbox 360 dashboard reduces video quality
Increases video compression artifacts, as well.
If you are noticing a different color of green on your Xbox, no it’s not your eyes.
According to a Digital Foundry investigation, the new Xbox 360 dashboard update has seemingly borked the video playback quality on the system. As many users have even pointed out, the system “forces video content to run at limited range RGB levels, the net result being that colours are washed out, with blacks becoming grey.”
And as if that wasn’t enough, Digital Foundry also found that “video compression artifacts are considerably more noticeable” and that “macroblocking that would be otherwise be less apparent within darker colours is now more readily visible”.
Microsoft has yet to comment on the matter, and there doesn’t seem to be a work-around solution at hand. Apparently, beta testers had notified Microsoft about the problem, but were told their feedback will not be incorporated in the final release.
