Rumor: Next-gen consoles to feature AMD GPUs
Microsoft and Sony to follow Nintendo with AMD graphics card for their next consoles.
Nintendo has already announced that its upcoming console, WiiU, will feature an AMD graphics chip to power the visuals, however, it seems Microsoft and Sony will be following suit with their next console as well, according to sources at HardOCP.
Despite Nvidia’s Tegra and Tegra 2 heavyweights capturing the smartphone market, it seems the popular graphics processor manufactures will be sidelined for the next generation of console hardware. Currently, Xbox 360 uses a custom AMD GPU, while the PS3 uses one developed by Nvidia.
On the CPU side, the source claims that Microsoft will opt for a IBM-created chip although it does add that could “ever so slightly” change. It also added that Microsoft may choose to delay the launch of its next console due to the success of Kinect for the Xbox 360.
As for Sony, the source states that “…we hear it is still unsettled between some kind of Bulldozer (would most likely be an APU) variant and a newer updated 32nm IBM cell processor. This one appears to have flip flopped back and forth a few times but it will likely firm up very soon.”
Well, as long as it’s powerful enough to run Unreal Engine 4, we are good.
