PS3 hacker Geohot asks for donations, help from media
Sony’s wanted man says the company sued “the wrong guy”.
iPhone and PS3 jailbreaker GeoHot has setup a website asking for donations to fight his battle against Sony’s bombardment of lawsuits. He calls the company a bully, saying that they sued the wrong guy as he never advocated piracy through his hacking. He then specifically calls the media to spread out the word.
“Media, I need your help. This is the first time I have ever asked. Please, if you support this cause, help me out and spread the word. I want, by the time this goes to trial, to have Sony facing some of the hardest hitting lawyers in the business. Together, we can help fix the system.”
GeoHot says that he has already racked up over $10,000 in legal fees, noting that Sony has five lawyers and he has only two. He continues to maintain his stance over the issue, saying that he only wants a legitimate path to homebrew, which according to him should be legal once a consumer has bought the product for himself.
If Sony were to settle, “I want the settlement terms to include OtherOS on all PS3s and an apology on the PlayStation blog for ever removing it,” he notes. “It’d be good PR for Sony too, lord knows they could use it. I’m also willing to accept a trade, a legit path to homebrew for knowledge of how to stop new firmwares from being decrypted.”
There is mass hatred for Sony for going after GeoHot, and there is a great number of incidents in the past where the ‘community’ as come together and helped individuals with donations. It would be interesting where this goes.
