Playstation 2 ships 150 million units worldwide
People are still buying it in spades.
Sony today announced that since its launch back in 2000, Playstation 2 has now shipped more than 150 million units worldwide, a staggering number which continues to grow despite superior systems available in the market. A truly fantastic achievement for this old bugger.
Sony also confirmed that over 1.52 billion units of software for the console have been shipped, with a total of 10, 828 games making up the enormous library for the system. The company believes that demand for the PS2 will continue in markets like Eastern Europe, South America, South East Asia and of course, the Middle East.
Playstation 2 had released on March 4, 2000 in Japan and October 26, 2000 in the US, closely followed by a November 24, 2000 release in Europe. The launch was accompanied by games like Ridge Racer V, FIFA 2001,Ready 2 Rumble Boxing, TimesSplitters, etc. The system’s best seller was, no not God of War or Metal Gear Solid, but Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, considered to be the finest GTA yet, which has sold over 20 million units as of Feb 2009.
We don’t wish for the PS2 to grow anymore, and it shouldn’t, but here is hoping the PS3 lives up to what its predecessor has left behind.
